Roped-In

Roped-In

Roped-In: the second step in Temple’s progressive core curriculum

A four part series on the foundations of rope play through the lens of embodiment and intentionality. January 15th & 22nd, February 5th & 12th.

Our intro class Rope 0 is a prerequisite to this class.

Join Mrghy and friends on this journey to begin an intentional, body-based, connective rope practice. While lots of time will be spent on rope handling and skill building, this course will focus on both ends of the rope, to serve both folks giving and receiving it. Switching is welcome but not necessary!

The classes will cover:

Session 1: Basic tension, frictions, and knots; collapsible and non-collapsible single-column ties. Risk assessment and mitigation, nerve safety overview.

Session 2: Body handling and affective rope skills; how to move a body; how to use rope to move a body. Double-column ties.

Session 3: Somatics for rope; Hojo cuffs and Yuki fix; One-rope practice (Ipponnawa)

Session 4: Floor-based ties; how to use rope to bind a body in a shape for play.

Each session includes a discussion, a short demo, and plenty of practice time, leading to building a full, floor-based rope scene.

There are no technical prerequisites for this course but Rope 0 is required before you can take Roped In.

In order to promote continuity of learning and community trust, we’d like to have a max of 10 pairs for the whole series. Drop-ins will NOT be available for these, and registered pairs should remain the same throughout (learning buddies are the best!).

Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome, and any comfortable outfit you like to move in. We will have some jute rope to use for practice, but we encourage you to bring your own (so you can practice at home between sessions!). 2-3 pieces will suffice, any material is welcome.

Mrghy has been working on embodiment in and out of rope for two decades. Rope has been a friend for over 10 years, and a fundamental practice for the past 5. She brings her expertise in embodiment, somatics, trauma-informed practices, and mindfulness to the experience of rope as a bottom leaning switch. She is passionate about sharing information about trauma, pain science, and vulnerable conditions such as hypermobility, neurodivergence, and addiction with communities of all kinds, and those involved in shibari, kink, and BDSM in particular. She co-founded Temple in Bushwick in 2019.

Must take all four classes to attend. To RSVP see information here

Hogtie Rodeo

Hogtie Rodeo

It’s a hogtie ho-down! William will be demonstrating a variety of hogties ranging from single rope (ichinawa) to partially suspendable variations.  Want to turn your bottom into a suitcase? We can do that.  Want to immobilize someone so they can be your prey? Yes, we do.

During these escalating ties, we will be going over body movement techniques, rope handling tips and tricks, and how to combine single and double column ties with hojo cuffs while employing a variety of frictions.  If you’re new to futomomos (leg binds) we’ll be going over simple versions that are great for floor ties and partials.

Attendees should come in pairs and bring 6-8 lengths of rope depending on how deep you want to go in the ties.  Prerequisites for this workshop are Rope0 and Roped In.

Wheel of Consent

Embodying Consent Beyond Yes and No: An Introduction to the Wheel of Consent

The Wheel of Consent, developed by Betty Martin, is a wonderful framework to help us ask for what we want, to find our pleasure, and to deepen our capacity for authentic connection, intimacy and compassion. Learning about the different quadrants (Serve, Take, Accept and Allow) can help bring clarity around giving and receiving and distinguishing between who is doing and who it’s for. Practicing the Wheel through touch exercises helps to bring the quadrants into our bodies!

This class will be an Introduction to the Wheel of Consent through discussion and several short, paired exercises that will move us through the quadrants of the Wheel. Participants are welcome to opt out of the exercises and observe, or request that they be non-touch. Seating is mostly on the floor on mats (There are few seats available on a small couch.) We will have some cushions and pillows available, if you are able please bring a small pillow and/or blanket.

Please note: space opens 15 minutes before the start of class. Due to the sensitive subject of this workshop, please give yourself time to arrive and ground in the space to start on time with the opening circle.

Teacher Bio:

Beth Poague is an educator with a focus on disability justice and inclusion and is training to become a certified Wheel of Consent Facilitator (schoolofconsent.org).

Embracing the Gote

Embracing the Gote

With Anna Noctuelle

The Gote, or Takate Kote, represents more than just a technical harness—it's a profound journey of connection, sensation, and mutual understanding. This workshop invites both riggers and models to explore this iconic and foundational tie through a holistic, nuanced lens. We will learn about the structure and purpose of this tie, how it affects your body, identify potential risks and learn how to manage and mitigate them.

Beyond mere technical execution, we'll delve into the rich emotional landscape of the Gote. Participants will discover how this tie transcends its practical purposes, becoming a powerful medium of communication, trust, and shared experience. This workshop is designed for both riggers and models who wish to deepen their understanding of this simple yet complex tie and want to enhance their experience in ropes. The workshop will be a mix of discussions, Q&A, and practical exercises.

It would be beneficial if the people tying/riggers would be able to tie a 2TK or at least the upper wrap.

Shibari Notation

Shibari Notation

Shibari Notation

Please note: this is a two day workshop that takes place on February 22nd and 23rd from 12pm-6pm

Being a Shibari model at heart who has also performed a bit in my life and loves to develop ideas and sequences, I've always felt that I need a system to convey my ideas reliably to my rigger without complicated descriptions or working it out live on the mat. My ballet background made up the frame from which the sequence notation system derives. But not only is it a tool for developing performances together and communicating ideas to each other, the applications are manyfold:

Have you ever found yourself snapping dozens of photos during a workshop, only to struggle piecing together the precise suspension sequence later? Or felt disheartened by your inability to sketch meaningful stick figures that aid in comprehending a sequence? Perhaps you've been struck with ideas for experimenting in a rope jam during your morning shower, only to forget them entirely by the time you step onto the mat. Have you ever needed to come up with a performance but lacked sufficient time with your tying partner to go through every step, yet also lacked the language to convey it over the phone?

These amongst other reasons were my motivation to develop a graphical notation system for Shibari which is akin to choreography notation for dance or musical notation. It was invented to cater to the needs of exploration, documentation, and composition of Shibari sequences, offering both novices and seasoned practitioners an easy and straightforward yet precise method of notation. It serves as a means to document, recall, and construct sequence progressions with ease. Whether swiftly capturing ideas or memorising sequences from workshops or performances, this notation can be of great help. For advanced students, it facilitates the drafting and comprehension of new concepts before trying it out.

Establishing a universal language for Shibari notation fosters the exchange, preservation, and creation of learning materials, performances, exercises, and ideas for scenes. It could serve as a tool for archiving and preserving the creative work being done in this discipline.

Please note: this is a two-day workshop that takes place on February 22nd and 23rd from 12pm-6pm

Thirst Trap

Thirst Trap

Thirst Trap, Fetishistic objectification in rope

With Bondagious and Thumper

To offer yourself up as an object of desire is to step into a world of vulnerability and power. Here, you become the feast—your body bound and displayed, framed to capture attention and ignite yearning. This is not merely about being taken and consumed but about choosing to be seen—weighed, assessed, admired.

Adopting a form of cis-gay male gaze, we will lean into erotic yearning fueled by parts logic, a detached hyper-fixation on specific segments or aspects of a body. Through a guided objectification exercise, we will investigate what catches the eye, what draws out longing, what stirs up an insatiable thirst. Then we will explore ways to use rope to bind and frame that which fascinates us.

This form of play involves dynamics of power: to break someone into parts is to take control of how they are perceived and desired. However, to be the source that provokes hunger is to hold sway over those who crave our flesh.

Decoupling the flesh from the human that occupies it, we can put down identities and relationships, temporarily suspending our humanity in order to investigate our carnal craving to consume and be consumed.

Prerequisites: This class is suitable for advanced beginners already familiar with body harness patterns and principles and who have previous experience being tied. We will not focus on technical aspects of tying and being tied, rather we will explore ways to bind the meat to provoke and stimulate our thirst.

Tickets sold as pairs. $120 per tying pair.

Follow My Lead

Follow My Lead, With Bondagious and Thumper

In this communication exercise, we will deliberately invert conventional tying power dynamics such that the person-in-rope carries both the power AND the control. Using only words to describe specific ties, body parts and relative positions, bottoms will lead tops through a mystery transition sequence in this challenging game of “follow my lead”. Will we be able to communicate clearly as the intensity of the tie increases?

Prerequisites: This class is suitable for advanced beginners and up, as we will focus on developing clear communication under pressure. The principles of this activity can be applied to any tying sequence or structure, however advanced practitioners comfortable with dynamic suspension may wish to use this exercise to hone their proficiency while in the air.

RSVP is $280 per tying pair for the 4 sessions

4 Elements - The Technique of Sensual Rope Bondage  by Tati Limati

Imagine yourself in a shibari laboratory—a place dedicated to the exploration of techniques, feelings, sensations, silence, dance, energy, animal instincts, meditation, philosophy, aesthetics, intensity, and discipline... all through the medium of rope.

In this space, you study a variety of techniques designed to open you up and bring more meaning to the dynamics of being gentle or tough. You learn to be mindful of breathing and emotional states, especially your own. The goal is to be as sincere and free as possible in the expression of shibari.

The four elements of shibari—"Air," "Earth," "Fire," and "Water"—are not merely a classification within a body-oriented approach; they also serve as a philosophical foundation that can unlock even greater potential and value within you, inspiring a deeper connection with others. This foundation, built upon years of experience, is presented in a pragmatic form accessible to everyone.

In this introductory workshop we will touch in some of the main techniques that characterize this approach, such as:

  • Theory of history and philosophy: "4 Elements" with demonstrations of each practice included in Shibari (Aikido, Thai massage, Contact Improv, Qigong, Tantra, BDSM)

  • Body mechanics of movement and points of influence on the body

  • Practice of four behavioral techniques for easier improvisation with ropes

  • "Ichi Nawa": Working with one rope to create a sensual connection with a partner

  • Different options for predicament ties

  • Exploring the senses in sensual tying

  • How to create a story with ropes

  • Developing empathy

  • Sensual "4 Elements" Gote Shibari and the art of touching your partner's heart

Prerequisites:

-       Single column tie

-       Wrapping, tension and reverse tension

-       Have an understanding of basic frictions: half hitch, nodome, yuki fix

-   Gote (Tekate Kote) shibari ( some understanding, can be  rudimentary)

Suitable for Beginner-Intermediate and Advanced levels

Materials:

You need 4 ropes 7-8 meters long.

Bring comfortable clothing.

If you like to take notes during class, please bring pen and paper.

This workshop is ideally followed as a couple, but it is also possible to self-tie.

Switching is allowed.

You should know these shibari basics:

-       Single column tie

-       Wrapping, tension and reverse tension

-       Have an understanding of basic frictions: half hitch, nodome, yuki fix

-   Gote (Tekate Kote) shibari

About Tati Limati

Tati is a Ukrainian shibari artist and instructor.

She studied in Europe and Japan. Among others, her teachers were Naka Akira, Ren Yagami, Kinoko Hajime, Nicolas Yoroi. She also studied the Yukimura style. She has a background in aikido, tango, contact improvisation, femdom, tantra and other practices. She is currently studying to obtain a third higher education degree in psychology.

Tati is the organizer of international events in Ukraine and Poland and a regular contributor to Shibari Theatre in Asia and around the world. Tati is also a traveler. She currently lives in Thailand.

Over the course of 12 years, Tati Limati has not just been training her rope skills, but researched many techniques and practices to integrate in her shibari practice. She combines elements of martial arts, contact improvisation, tantra, qi gong and Thai massage with the purpose of adding depth and sincerity to her own shibari work.

In her teachings, she intends to help participants explore their underlying motivations and add deeper layers to their shibari play. With her techniques she aims to develop an understanding and the use of improvisation, making her students actively establish their own identities in rope play, instead of copying others without questioning.

Shibari Theater

Shibari Theater is a unique performance that immerses the audience in a profound world of emotions, feelings, and personal stories. It raises important questions, touching on triggers and details that awaken long-forgotten experiences and reveal new dimensions of sensation. This is an art form where the rope becomes not just a tool, but a means of genuine communication between the performers and the audience.

At the core of the theatre lies a synthesis of various art forms: dance, Aikido, contact improvisation, and live music. These elements intertwine during a 40-minute journey of transformation, culminating in a refined and elegant tea ceremony, creating an atmosphere of calm and completeness.

Each viewer leaves with not only lasting impressions but also food for reflection, having connected with something deep and sincere.

About The Shibari Theater:

Under Wraps

In this interactive class, Anya Demure & Donna With The Mouth will discuss important bottoming skills such as body awareness, communication, and vetting. They will also cover physical and emotional aspects of safety before, after, and during a scene. Anya and Donna will incorporate hands-on exercises throughout so that attendees can practice some of these skills.

This class welcomes bottoms, tops, and switches alike, because these skills are valuable for everyone. But the discussion will center the voices, perspectives, and needs of rope bottoms (people in rope / people who get tied). People of all experience levels, ranging from people curious to try being tied to experienced rope bottoms, are welcome. Attendees do not need a partner for this workshop.

Teacher Bios

Anya Demure (she/her) is a rope bondage enthusiast, teacher, and performer who is especially jazzed about beginners' education!  She is keen on creating and embodying interesting physical shapes, and delights in enduring physically challenging rope experiences. For her, rope bondage is endurance, sex, exercise, community, movement, art, collaboration, and mutual experience.  She is also dedicated to promoting bottom-inclusive education and presentation, and fostering safe, friendly, and encouraging learning environments.  She has been fortunate to teach, tie, and be tied in various communities in the US and abroad, but calls Brooklyn home.

Donna with the Mouth (she/her) is Brooklyn-based masochist who has been active in the NYC scene since 2015. Her kinks -- from impact to rope bondage -- explore the limits of power and endurance within a framework of active communication. She also performs as a rope bottom at kink and leather festivals across the United States and Canada. As a bondage educator, Donna works to pass on her years of experience in rope to foster community, encourage exploration, and increase accessibility. Most of all, she is passionate about open communication and collaborative negotiation, recognizing the vulnerability of exploration on both sides of the slash.

Under Tension
Nov

Under Tension

This evening is about suspension lines beyond their suitability to suspend. Rather, the focus will be on their ability to create tension, and the possibilities for play that open up when shifting to this point of view. Being able to handle a suspension line means more control over pressure, physical intensity and access to more postures for restraint as opposed to without. They are also greatly helpful for the rope top in order to manipulate and access the bottoms body without using as much strength.

The workshop is suitable for anyone with some type of prior education in suspension lines, including those who are not quite ready to suspend, but nonetheless want to familiarize themselves with using suspension points as a tool. For those already suspending this class can still be very beneficial in order to step back from routine and add more complexity to their tying sessions.

While ties will be rather simple, basic techniques like attaching a suspension line to a harness, or locking off will not be taught. Therefore, it is not recommended that this is your very first introduction to suspension lines. Please make sure that you have received tuition in basic techniques prior to attending. Being able to tie a single column well is fundamental for all of the exercises. Ask someone experienced for feedback if unsure.

4-5 jute ropes and 1 shorter rope will be needed.

Tickets sold as pairs. $120 per tying pair.

$40 deposit, $80 cash at the start of class.

Tam’s Bio:

Tamandua is a Swedish rigger based in Berlin, Germany. He has been working with rope professionally, primarily through teaching and offering intimate sessions to clients, since 2016.

Although a rope top most of the time, he has broad experience as a rope bottom as well, and highly values ability to relate to both perspectives. He is a queer person, who appreciates tying with people of various gender.

‘I consider kinbaku to be a complex erotic art, which is empathetically sadomasochistic at it’s core. Often tying in a way that can be challenging both for the one tying and the one in the  ropes, my Shibari usually demands a lot of technical clarity when in the role of a teacher. At the same time, the student’s individuality is a priority when it comes to learning methods and intention. I view Kinbaku as a practice of continuous exploration – where new doors open as you go deeper and further with a partner, over the course of a session, or over the course of a long partnership. Sometimes though, the magic that defines Kinbaku can be just that one alluring image that sticks with you, a moment suspended in time. For me, the essence of Kinbaku lies in the meeting between the aesthetic expression and the emotional and sensual intention of the practice. And the more ones tying develop, the more seamlessly the parts can intermingle.’

Weekend Intensive with Tamandua
Nov

Weekend Intensive with Tamandua

On Saturday November 2nd and Sunday November 3rd, Tamandua visits NYC with Chuck as his model, to share his personal approach to Kinbaku, using some of his commonly used ties and techniques. The class concept will focus a lot on the ability to manage the intensity of a tie with subtle adjustments and calm assertiveness. During the workshop Tamandua will show some ties that when executed correctly, allow the top to easily control how intense they are for the bottom. The idea is to develop more confidence to play, especially in the territory of Semenawa – tormenting rope. Guidance on how to tie and get tied more fluently, in a more natural feeling way, using body/rope management and communicative cues, will be a big part of the learning material for both tops/riggers and bottoms/models. Tamandua and his partner will explain how these factors play into the ‘soft skills’ of rope bondage, and into the power exchange principles of erotically tormenting rope.

Technically, each tie is introduced through getting familiar with the basic building blocks which it is made up of. By learning the technical details of the harnesses used, and exploring how they feel and function under load of suspension, and simpler applications. As the final exercise each day, this collected knowledge gets put to the test when we enjoy a longer and (for top and bottom) more challenging tie.

Please note this class takes place on both November 2nd and 3rd from 12-7pm

Requirements:

  • Both tops/riggers AND bottoms/models need to have prior experience with suspension, and with TK/gote.

  • Riggers need to have learned how to make and lock suspension lines safely, and know these techniques by heart.

  • Riggers also need to be able to tie a solid TK, even though Tamandua’s variation will be taught in class, as this is a very high risk profile type of tie to learn for suspension. Therefore the workshop should not be one of your first experiences with TK suspension.

  • All these skills need to have been learned through an experienced instructor IRL (not video).

  • Everyone attending should be familiar with how to recognise signs of nerve damage, nerve impingement, and how to actively check for it during a tying session.

  • Please review your skills before purchasing tickets.

Tickets sold as pairs. $400 per tying pair for the weekend.

$160 deposit, $240 cash at the start of class.

CANCELLATION POLICY: you can reschedule once or ask for a refund up to 48 hours before the event. Bamboo, Body, and Rope

Bamboo, Body, and Rope

This class will teach ties that incorporate a thin bamboo stick by tying it against the body. The ties are designed to introduce an additional element of restriction, when tying on the floor, utilizing the rigidness of the bamboo stick as opposed to the very pliable quality of rope.

We start the class by techniques to attach rope, body and bamboo together well, as this can be a challenge as bamboo is a slippery surface to tie on. Then specific ties, with themes like posture, exposure and torment, are taught. Detailing matters of placement of bamboo along the body, with body mechanics in mind, to achieve the desired effect.

This is a mixed level class suitable for students confident in fundamental tying techniques; You need to be able to tie single column tie well, without teacher support, and have prior experience in attending Shibari classes or workshops. It is not recommended as an introduction to shibari. Switching roles between ties is welcome if both partners are capable, but not mandatory.

Tickets sold as pairs. $120 per tying pair
