Tying Outside the Box— How to unlock your creativity in ropes
with Discover Kinbaku
What we see on social media, what we want to copy, and what we learn in class are the forms: Kata (型 or 形). A form is necessary to learn the basics, establish didactics, and make progress. But it is just the ladder, the step-stones that should bring us to creative application. Hence, much too often, we repeat the known patterns and figures even when we tie for us, for our partners - for real.
In this one-day class, we offer an invitation, an approach - and our past five years of research - on how to tie for real and not think the form from the end, not aim for an already known figure. We will share our method of creating a form using the elements you already know and getting into the flow by progressively tying rope by rope, finding inspiration in your partner and the present moment.
The class will include inspirational impulses and demonstrations, but mainly it’s a hands-on workshop: you will tie and/or get tied a lot. Role switching is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.
For whom is it?
This workshop is for people who already have an initial experience in Japanese-inspired rope bondage and want to learn tools to create more satisfying sessions, independent of the "rope style" they were exposed to.
What you will learn
…as a rigger:
building on the previous learned basic principles
understanding the concepts of improvisation in ropes
understanding important safety aspects, and how to evaluate a tie on-the-go
gaining confidence in your abilities and self-confidence for more creative sessions private or at a Jam
… as a rope-bottom:
bringing attention to your body, noticing your feelings and sensations
reconnecting to your inner feeling of safety in the moment, instead of anticipating
getting familiar with a rope impact and learning to enjoy it
developing ability to express yourself in ropes in your own unique way
Requirements:
For your role as a rigger to know the basics of Japanese rope bondage, have already learned the basic tools, like non-collapsing cuffs, friction, and counter-tension as well as rope flow and tension management, leading to a general knowledge of solid harnesses around the upper and lower body. In your role as being tied, general awareness in ropes is necessary, and being able to attend to their body and communicate potential issues in the near time.
Bring along: comfortable and inspiring clothing to your liking and at least 10 jute ropes, 6 mm, 7 - 8 m long
Tickets sold as pairs, $240 per tying pair.
