Under Tension

This evening is about suspension lines beyond their suitability to suspend. Rather, the focus will be on their ability to create tension, and the possibilities for play that open up when shifting to this point of view. Being able to handle a suspension line means more control over pressure, physical intensity and access to more postures for restraint as opposed to without. They are also greatly helpful for the rope top in order to manipulate and access the bottoms body without using as much strength.

The workshop is suitable for anyone with some type of prior education in suspension lines, including those who are not quite ready to suspend, but nonetheless want to familiarize themselves with using suspension points as a tool. For those already suspending this class can still be very beneficial in order to step back from routine and add more complexity to their tying sessions.

While ties will be rather simple, basic techniques like attaching a suspension line to a harness, or locking off will not be taught. Therefore, it is not recommended that this is your very first introduction to suspension lines. Please make sure that you have received tuition in basic techniques prior to attending. Being able to tie a single column well is fundamental for all of the exercises. Ask someone experienced for feedback if unsure.

4-5 jute ropes and 1 shorter rope will be needed.

Tickets sold as pairs. $120 per tying pair.

$40 deposit, $80 cash at the start of class.

Tam’s Bio:

Tamandua is a Swedish rigger based in Berlin, Germany. He has been working with rope professionally, primarily through teaching and offering intimate sessions to clients, since 2016.

Although a rope top most of the time, he has broad experience as a rope bottom as well, and highly values ability to relate to both perspectives. He is a queer person, who appreciates tying with people of various gender.

‘I consider kinbaku to be a complex erotic art, which is empathetically sadomasochistic at it’s core. Often tying in a way that can be challenging both for the one tying and the one in the  ropes, my Shibari usually demands a lot of technical clarity when in the role of a teacher. At the same time, the student’s individuality is a priority when it comes to learning methods and intention. I view Kinbaku as a practice of continuous exploration – where new doors open as you go deeper and further with a partner, over the course of a session, or over the course of a long partnership. Sometimes though, the magic that defines Kinbaku can be just that one alluring image that sticks with you, a moment suspended in time. For me, the essence of Kinbaku lies in the meeting between the aesthetic expression and the emotional and sensual intention of the practice. And the more ones tying develop, the more seamlessly the parts can intermingle.’
